Seinfeldian Moments in Strangelove

Dr. Strangelove plays this month on Turner Classic. If you have ever reminisced about the Seinfeld moments in your life, you might appreciate these Seinfeldian moments in the film, Dr Strangelove, or: How I Learned to stop worrying and love the bomb.

*1) The Big Board: General Buck Turgidson is completely paranoid about the Russians being able to see “the Big Board”. Haven’t you ever thought about how childish the rules and games are that the highest in command play as they move people and entire cultures around on their imaginary chess boards?

*2)Precious Bodily Fluids: I can never think of fluoride in the same way after hearing Sterling Hayden as the deranged Brigadier General Jack D. Ripper talk seriously about how fluoridation of the water was sapping his “precious bodily fluids.”

*3) Slim Pickens is for ever immortalized as he is riding the rocket at the end of the film. It’s been reported that Pickens was not told he was acting in a comedy, but simply read his lines straight. His classic take-away line after reading a checklist for his survival kit was,”Shoot, a feller could have a pretty good weekend in Vegas with all that stuff!”

*4) General Turgidson again, in one of George C Scott’s greatest roles, is talking about the possibility of nuclear war. After Peter Sellers, as President Muffley, exclaims that this is Mass Murder, Turgidson answers with, “I didn’t say we wouldn’t get our hair mussed!”

*5) President Muffley (Sellers) in his finest ironic mode: “ Gentlemen, you can’t fight in here. This is the War Room!”

The music that plays us out at the end, We’ll meet again also closed out Stephen Colbert’s final show. Dr. Strangelove lives with us on a daily basis. When Kubrick read the script for the thriller, Red Alert, he decided the only solution was to make a comedy. It was just too absurd in parts.

Unfortunately, like Kubrick, we can only see the way the super powers play games with entire nations and instead of shrieking or shrugging our shoulders, the only thing left to do is laugh at the absurdity of it all.

For those Dems in Despair...Take Heart!

Here is something that I've noticed. The fact is, most of the Hillary supporters were very upbeat and happy before the Election. And the mood for most Trump voters has always been some kind of perpetual gloom and doom attitude towards everything. They walk around perpetually convinced that Armageddon is near. Well, now that the Apocalypse has occurred (at least in Blue America), we need to take a deep breath, take a few steps, and look at the Big Picture from 10,000 feet. 1. Trump has to deliver: On all those promises, both real and totally unrealistic that he made during the Election. And although I understand that he is not a "normal" candidate, and we have much to worry about, he now has to perform. And as Mario Cuomo said, " You campaign in poetry. But you govern in prose ". Meaning when it comes down to brass tacks, he must go back to the same old Republican Dogma that has made up the GOP for the past forty years. Tax cuts for the rich, trickle-dow...

Hillary and the Man in the Arena

From the standpoint of one who voted for and endorsed Barack Obama over Hillary Clinton, there seems to be a question hanging in the air. How could someone who opposed the Clintonian dynasty support Hillary’s bid for the Presidency? Isn’t it a bit hypocritical? Or at least inconsistent with the view previously taken? This is true for many supporters of Obama. Some on the left cannot support her bid for President.They see many of her acknowledged flaws and conclude she cannot be a viable option. My view comes from watching her over the course of the past eight years, four as the Secretary of State within this Administration. And having watched the two debate in 2008- Obama vs. Hillary- there can be little question that the divide that separates them on most issues is a small one. Theirs is a centrist left view of the world. On Foreign Policy, I daresay that Hillary would never have worked for Obama had she held wildly opposing views from his own world view. But the...

The Looming Tower is before us...

The Looming Tower is the famous title of the book written about 9/11. Lots of reflections have taken place since that book was released. What we have gained and what we lost has been reflected upon in great detail as we marked the 20 th Anniversary of 9/11 in this country. The type of things we value were on display. Law enforcement heroes and firefighters who showed courage in the face of looming disaster were remembered and honored. The heroes of the doomed Pennsylvania flight who chose to take the plane down rather than allow the evil hijackers to assault the government were praised and lauded. What we cherish was on full display. How we learned to grieve is part of our legacy. The long road back to restore the pride of our New York skyline was another tale. We even debated, in the tradition of Americans, how to remember the Towers and the legacy that they left to us. It was also a stark reminder of why we went to fight...
