The Herculean Task of the Democratic House in 2019

Nancy Pelosi has finally said something about what Dems will do when and if they take control of the House. The laundry list should begin to get awfully long by now. The Ethics concerns should have begun to pile up from Day One of the Trump Presidency. At present, there is no mechanism of checks and balances on the insider trading, the cronyism, the government waste, fraud and abuse, the corruption and flagrant spending of taxpayer money for personal expenses within this corrupt administration.

Steve Schmidt, former Republican strategist, is correct in saying the Democrats should have been better at hammering home this message. And frankly, the Dems have never been good at messaging and they aren’t getting any better now. But the Trump Administration is so bad, so corrupt and over-reaching, that they may win in spite of themselves.

The list should include:

·         Hearings on ALL Trump Administration officials to restore oversight and win back the trust of the American people to let the public know that government is supposed to work for us

·         Hearings on the power of the purse, and the tariffs that Trump has imposed can be wiped out

·         Insuring Sanctions against Russia will remain in place as Putin and his cronies are working suspiciously hand in hand with Trump & his allies

·         Trump himself: The Big Kahuna needs to be reined in bigly- meaning passing legislation that will insure that no person can run for the highest office in the land without disclosing their tax returns and pledging to place their assets in a blind trust established by a third party.

·         Restoring the Rule of Law; The EPA and Attorney General offices, the DOJ and the restoration of faith in our National Security officials

·         The Sanctity of our ELECTIONS: Holding hearings to find out what happened in 2016; and establishing effective Cyber-Security measures to prevent the 2020 Presidential Election from being hacked like the last one

·         The CENSUS: Working to ensure the upcoming census will not result in partisan gerrymandering as the Trump Administration is working to destroy faith in our government agencies;

·         Working to pass a VOTING RIGHTS ACT; and to fight voter suppression laws on the books in red states

·         Fighting for HEALTH CARE: As Trump & team have worked to undermine and destroy Obamacare; the Blue Wave will have to work very hard to establish the stronghold of health care for all and work to protect our basic rights and establishment of protecting those with pre-existing conditions and Obamacare policies from losing coverage

·         Fighting for the environment; as Trump & co have worked each day to destroy hard fought rules that protect every American and our air and water; the basic rights and fundamental things that we need for our health and happiness.

There is always the specter of impeachment hanging over the head of this administration, like the Sword of Damocles. But frankly, if that laundry list is achieved, Trump will be toothless as he tries to limp towards a 2020 bid. It would be doubtful he could mount a successful bid for re-election, if he is exposed with hearings and reined in, particularly in his financial dealings and shady past as a businessman.

He will be defeated, if there are enough people in the opposition with the will to fight and to expose him and his gang of “Banana Republic” cronies, as Steve Schmidt characterized them. If they are exposed as the crooked gang of cheats that has been laid out before us, then we will be able to continue to defeat them at the ballot box and eventually, in the courts. The arc of Justice is long and slow, but it will prevail. Let’s hope the Republic can hold up to the daily onslaught in the interim...

Hillary and the Man in the Arena

From the standpoint of one who voted for and endorsed Barack Obama over Hillary Clinton, there seems to be a question hanging in the air. How could someone who opposed the Clintonian dynasty support Hillary’s bid for the Presidency? Isn’t it a bit hypocritical? Or at least inconsistent with the view previously taken? This is true for many supporters of Obama. Some on the left cannot support her bid for President. They see many of her acknowledged flaws and conclude she cannot be a viable option. My view comes from watching her over the course of the past eight years, four as the Secretary of State within this Administration. And having watched the two debate in 2008- Obama vs. Hillary- there can be little question that the divide that separates them on most issues is a small one. Theirs is a centrist left view of the world. On Foreign Policy, I daresay that Hillary would never have worked for Obama had she held wildly opposing views from his own world view. But the...

What hath We Wrought?

If someone waking from a deep freeze just saw that tape where Trump was bragging off the record about the way he treated women, grabbing them by the crotch because they "let you do it", it would seem that so many red flags are raised that they would immediately conclude it as disqualifying for any candidate for higher office. It goes without saying that women are not objects, or something lesser to be grabbed and treated as toys or groped simply because someone believes themselves immune from the rules of polite society, an ethical code of conduct or common human decency. It was obvious that Trump couldn't handle even the small amount of power that is bestowed on a Hollywood TV Reality star. Why would anyone think that this person could handle the immense power and pressure that the highest office in the land entails? That does say something about the voters. Voters didn't vote simply for change, they voted for the strong man who didn't just fall to the top...

Are we even asking the right questions?

What is this about really? Are we somehow conflating this withdrawal with the idea of America as a superpower?  Is it about American Exceptionalism and the idea that we have lost our innocence? Is this something that we will use to justify what we are doing in the world; where we are going, and what we want to be known for in the world? Just asking what we want to stand would be a good start in terms of questions going forward. This may be a conversation that needs to be had in the coming years. All of the talk,   and the hopes and aspirations were discussed and mapped out before being put into the small 21st Century online political group that was created in 2017. The thoughts & ideas came from a hopeful take on the dark reflections seen in the election of Trump in 2016. Are we a country and a people that are even capable of building a better tomorrow?   We need to be able to have this serious talk with Allies and others of good will;   T...
